5 Things to Do on Your PS5 Before the GTA 6 Preload

GTA 6 on PS5

GTA was the game I mostly played on my PS2, back when nothing needed installing and the only storage problem was a memory card.

My PS5 is a different story, because I only open its storage screen when a download fails, and that is usually the worst moment to find out how full it is. I still have that PS2 too, which I covered in my old PS2 guide.

To get your PS5 ready for GTA 6, you mostly need free space and good timing, and the preload opens on November 10.

Updated November 9, 2026. Dates and storage requirements have been checked against the latest Rockstar and PlayStation announcements.

TL;DR: GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar says the preload needs up to 212GB of free space. Digital buyers can start the download at midnight local time on November 10, and boxed copies contain a code instead of a disc. Clear space now, turn on automatic downloads, and leave the console on or in Rest Mode.

How much space GTA 6 needs on PS5

Rockstar says the GTA 6 preload needs up to 212GB of free space, depending on your device.

The 212GB figure describes the preload file, so a few extra gigabytes of room is a sensible habit.

A PS5 with the original 825GB SSD leaves a widely reported 667GB or so for games, and Slim and Pro models differ. Against that usable space, GTA 6 alone takes close to a third.

Check your own free space under Settings, then Storage, since the number differs by model.

When the preload starts and when you can play

Digital preload on PS5 opens at midnight local time on November 10, 2026, while Xbox Series X|S players get it at 12 a.m. GMT the same day.

The game itself unlocks at midnight local time on November 19 in every region, so preloading gets you the files and not an early start.

I tend to underestimate how long a download this size takes on home internet, which is why I would start on day one instead of launch night.

Treat 212GB as the planning figure, and check the storage on your console before November 10.

Free up space to get your PS5 ready for GTA 6

Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, and look at what you have not touched in months.

Deleting does not cost you the game, because PlayStation lets you redownload purchases from your library.

Sorted by size, that list usually points at the answer in about ten seconds. The harder part is admitting which game you are not going back to.

Some PS5 games let you select Customize and remove individual content packs, such as a campaign you have finished.

If deleting is not enough

PS5 games can be stored on a USB drive, but they cannot be played from it, so an external hard drive only works as parking.

A compatible M.2 SSD is the option that lets you play from the added space, and PlayStation says it can go up to 8TB. Check the M.2 requirements from Sony for speed and size before you buy.

Whichever you pick, the console still needs the room for GTA 6 on its own storage or on the M.2 drive.

Set up automatic preload

On PS5, open Game Library, select GTA 6 and its countdown timer, and make sure auto-download is ticked.

PlayStation also suggests turning on Stay Connected to the Internet, and Rockstar says the console must be on or in Rest Mode, so avoid shutting it down fully.

PlayStation says content starts downloading once it becomes available, so you do not need to be awake or at the console when midnight arrives.

Xbox works the same way, with automatic updates on and the console left on or in Sleep mode.

Leaving a console in Rest Mode overnight feels like leaving a tap running, but it is the step that lets the download happen while you sleep.

Physical copy, but no disc

The boxed version of GTA 6 contains a download code, and Rockstar says a disc will not be in the box.

Code-in-box copies should reach retailers from November 12, and the code can be redeemed as soon as you have it to start preloading.

Rockstar lists the platforms, editions and versions on its support page, which is worth a read before you buy at a store.

Standard or Ultimate

In the US, the Standard Edition is $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition is $99.99, and other regions price it differently, so check your own store page.

Digital pre-orders and purchases of either edition before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack.

Rockstar lists a separate Ultimate Edition Upgrade for Standard owners, though your store may not let you buy it yet.

Neither choice changes the storage you need to clear today, which is why I would sort the space first and decide the edition afterward.

What to check on launch eve

On the night of November 18, confirm the preload has finished and check free space once more.

Captured clips and other downloads can quietly use up the room you cleared.

If a download stalls, PlayStation has a troubleshooting page for downloaded games, and Rockstar support is available around the clock.

None of this makes the game better, but a finished preload makes launch night calmer, and that is most of what getting ready means.
