Used vs refurbished iPhone: the difference is the seller, not the phone

The used vs refurbished iPhone question sounds like it is about the phone, but it is mostly about the seller. No single standard binds every store, so each one decides what its own label means.

At one seller, refurbished means a new battery and shell. At another, it can mean a used phone that was tested, cleaned and wiped.

This guide compares what Apple, Back Market, Best Buy and Swappa publish about their terms. I have not tested units from each, so reviewer reports are credited to the reviewers.

TL;DR: Used usually means a working phone that was cleaned and wiped, and refurbished means it was inspected and repaired if needed. Apple’s refurbished iPhones come with a new battery, a new outer shell and a one year warranty. Other sellers use the same word for weaker promises, so compare the warranty and battery terms, not the label.

A used iPhone is a working phone sold by its owner or a reseller, usually cleaned and reset. Swappa describes refurbished as a device that was returned, inspected, repaired if needed and repackaged.

The trouble is that the same grades appear on both sides. Swappa notes that words like Excellent and Good are not standardized outside its own system.

The table comes from each seller’s own pages, read in November 2026. Warranty lengths on marketplaces can differ by seller and by condition.

Warranty and returns are where the gap shows

Apple includes its standard one year limited warranty with every Certified Refurbished product. Its page promises free shipping and returns but points to a separate policy for the return window, so check that before buying.

Back Market lists a one year warranty and a 30 day money back guarantee on its US pages. Best Buy says pre-owned products carry a 90 day warranty, and that warranty length varies by condition.

Swappa works differently. It reviews listings against set criteria, and some business sellers add their own one year limited warranty. A buyer who gets a phone that is not as described is owed a refund, but changing your mind is up to the seller.

Battery health is easy to overlook

This is the part that surprised me while reading the policies. I expected Back Market’s grades to say something about the battery, but they cover appearance only. Back Market says devices are fully functional at every grade, and only Premium raises the battery floor.

That floor is 90% at Premium, with genuine parts, and 80% at every other grade, per Back Market. Apple replaces the battery outright on its refurbished iPhones.

Swappa sets no minimum percentage, though sellers must disclose battery health below 80% when Apple’s battery message is showing. One Best Buy reviewer reported 84% on a 15 Pro Max rated excellent, so the label alone did not settle it.

Whichever route you take, open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health and read the number on arrival. A weak battery can also look like battery drain after an update, so a baseline helps.

What the label costs you

Swappa reported average sale prices on October 7, 2026 of $284 to $364 for the iPhone 14 and $386 to $491 for the iPhone 15. The ranges cover several storage tiers, so they are guides, not quotes.

A Best Buy pre-owned Excellent iPhone 14 128GB listing I saw was $419.99. When I checked, Apple’s refurbished iPhone page listed nothing under $659, starting with a 128GB iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 16, so those are different models and not a fair match.

Swappa, which sells used phones, says refurbished typically costs more than used. It argues you are paying a premium for a process you cannot always confirm. Apple’s own page cites savings of up to 15%.

Checks to run before you pay

Ask for the IMEI and run it through a checker, and confirm Find My and Activation Lock are off. Swappa says a phone with Activation Lock on cannot be set up by the buyer.

Check that the phone is unlocked if the listing says so. One Best Buy reviewer of a Geek Squad Certified Refurbished iPhone 12 said theirs was not actually unlocked and went back.

Write down the return window and the warranty length before you pay. If you are replacing a phone, your old iPhone can offset the cost through trade in or sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a refurbished iPhone better than a used iPhone?

Not automatically, because the label depends on the seller. Apple’s refurbished iPhones come with a new battery and a one year warranty, while other sellers promise less.

Does a refurbished iPhone have a new battery?

Apple’s Certified Refurbished iPhones do, according to its refurbished page. Back Market guarantees at least 80% capacity instead, and Best Buy states it per listing.

Is a used iPhone cheaper than a refurbished one?

Usually, yes. Swappa says refurbished typically costs more than used, though the gap varies by model and seller.

Can I return a used iPhone?

On Swappa, a phone that is not as described qualifies for a refund, but returns for a changed mind are at the seller’s discretion. Other sellers set their own windows, so read them first.

Where is the safest place to buy a refurbished iPhone?

Apple publishes the strongest terms, with a new battery and a one year warranty, though prices are higher. Elsewhere, look for a written warranty of at least 90 days and a stated battery minimum.

How this comparison was put together

Everything here comes from the sellers’ own published pages, read in November 2026, plus reviewer comments credited to the reviewers. I did not buy or test any of these phones.

I did not check Amazon Renewed, Walmart Restored, Gazelle or eBay, and Amazon’s help pages blocked automated access. Best Buy’s return window was not stated on the pages I read, so I left it out.

Prices and policies change often. Confirm the warranty, battery terms and return window on the listing itself before you buy.
