Instagram on Apple TV is now a real app instead of a workaround. Apple’s tvOS App Store listing says it requires tvOS 26.0 or later and promises Reels, longer videos to watch with friends, and live shows.
If you have ever mirrored a Reel from your phone to the living room TV, this is the version meant to replace that. What it can do on day one is less clear than the listing suggests.
TL;DR: Instagram has an Apple TV app that needs tvOS 26.0 or later and is free with in-app purchases. Apple’s listing names Reels, longer videos and live shows, but Meta described longer and live formats as still being explored. Update the box first, then see what actually shows up on your screen.
What Instagram on Apple TV offers
Apple’s listing sums it up in one line: “Enjoy Reels, watch longer videos with friends, catch live shows.” It also mentions finding new content and picking up where you left off across screens.
The app is free to download, with in-app purchases, and Apple rates it 13+ with content restrictions. That short description covers more ground than Meta had promised for TV a few months earlier.
Where the Apple TV app fits in Meta’s TV push
Meta’s June 22, 2026 newsroom post listed Samsung Smart TVs from the 2020 model year onward, Amazon Fire TV and Google TV as places Instagram for TV was available in the US. Meta called that the majority of connected TV devices in the country.
Apple TV was not on that list. It was the visible gap in the lineup, and it is the one this release fills.
Closing a gap on paper does not say how much of the experience made the trip.
What is still unclear about the Apple TV version
In June, Meta described longer creator videos, episodic series and Live on TV as formats it was still exploring, and said interest-based channels were being tested. The Apple TV listing now names longer videos and live shows, but it does not say how far along either one is.
Meta’s post also said casting Reels from a phone works on Google TV and Fire TV. Neither page says whether the Apple TV app supports the same phone-to-TV handoff, which matters if that is how you plan to use it.
The June post described the TV app as a US offering, and the listing does not spell out regions. If a feature is missing on your screen, that may be why.
Whether it earns a spot on your Apple TV
The requirement is the first thing to check. With tvOS 26.0 as the floor, a box that has not been updated will not show the app, so update it before you go searching. Our Apple TV 4K guide covers the current model if you are shopping for the box itself.
Reels are short, so my read is that the TV version suits background scrolling more than a sit-down viewing session. That is a guess about habit, not something either source says.
It also lands in a crowded living room, where a streaming bundle comparison may matter more to your monthly bill than another free app.
