HomePod mini 2 costs $149, but the Siri AI Apple is selling comes later

HomePod mini 2: $149, Ships October 30, Siri AI Later

Apple announced HomePod mini 2 on October 13, 2026, a $149 smart speaker with the S10 chip that is built around Siri AI. Pre-orders are open now, and it reaches Apple Stores on Friday, October 30, 2026.

The catch sits in the fine print. Siri AI arrives in a future software update, and the fullest version of it needs an iPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence nearby. The speaker you can buy this month is not quite the one Apple is describing.

TL;DR: HomePod mini 2 costs $149 and reaches stores on October 30, 2026, in pink, green, blue, white, and midnight. Siri AI is free but comes later, and personal context needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad in the home. The audio and smart home upgrades work at launch. Buy it for the speaker, and treat Siri AI as a bonus that has not shipped yet.

HomePod mini 2 price, colors, and release date

HomePod mini 2 costs $149 in the U.S. Apple opened pre-orders on October 13, 2026, through apple.com/store and the Apple Store app, in the U.S. and more than 23 other countries and regions.

In-store availability starts Friday, October 30, 2026. Apple says it is compatible with HomePod software 27.2, and it lists five colors.

The price and the colors are the easy part, because the harder question is what the speaker does once it is on a shelf.

Siri AI on HomePod mini 2 arrives later

Apple says Siri AI will come to the speaker in a future software update at no charge. It describes the assistant as more conversational, built on an entirely new architecture using the latest Apple Foundation Models.

No date is attached to that update. Anyone who buys on October 30 gets the hardware first and the assistant whenever Apple ships it.

That gap between what ships and what is promised matters more than the spec sheet suggests, and it gets sharper once you read the requirements.

Who gets the full Siri AI experience

The home owner needs an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad on the latest software, with Siri AI turned on. With that setup, the speaker can use personal context, recognize up to six household voices, and act across apps such as Messages, timers, and Calendar-linked reminders.

Without that device, a speaker still gets web-based world knowledge, conversation, and improved music discovery once Siri AI is enabled. Our Siri AI device list shows which iPhones qualify.

Siri AI is English only, in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK. Apple says Siri AI will not be initially available in the EU in iOS or iPadOS, and some server-side features have daily limits, with expanded access costing money in the future.

Sound Glow, surround sound, and Mac support

The S10 chip drives computational audio that analyzes music in real time. The speaker works alone, as a stereo pair, or in multiroom setups.

Sound Glow makes the top of the speaker glow and pulse to bass and treble, with colors drawn from the album artwork in Now Playing. Soundscapes such as rain trigger their own animations, and voice control of Sound Glow requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.

For home theater, four speakers join an Apple TV 4K (4th generation) for surround sound. They must be matching front and rear pairs of HomePod mini 2 or HomePod 2nd generation, and the system calibrates to each speaker’s position. Four HomePod mini 2 units at $149 each come to $596 before tax, which is the real price of this setup.

It can also serve as the default speaker for Mac models with Wi-Fi 6E or later. Our Apple TV 4K coverage explains the Siri AI side of that pairing.

HomePod mini 2 as a smart home hub

HomePod mini 2 handles voice control of locks, garage, blinds, thermostat, and lights, plus automations and scenes. It also works as a home hub, so you can control devices remotely from the Home app on iPhone.

Sound Recognition listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and sends alerts to iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Apple’s own footnote says it should not be relied on in situations involving risk of harm or emergencies, and it needs the updated Home architecture and current software on all home devices.

Apple says Siri requests can run on-device or in Private Cloud Compute, where data is not stored or accessible to Apple or anyone else. Apple Home Collection accessories, sold separately, arrive in December 2026, with select items in early 2027.

Who should buy now and who should wait

Buy it now if you want the speaker, the colors, or surround sound with an Apple TV 4K, because those work on October 30. Wait if Siri AI is the reason, since it has no release date and its personal features depend on a compatible iPhone or iPad.

“HomePod mini 2 brings together Siri AI, gorgeous new colors, and incredible audio,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s VP of Worldwide Home Product Marketing. Two of those three arrive on day one.
