The iOS 27 release date is Monday, September 14, Apple confirmed in a September 9 Newsroom announcement alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Almost every iPhone released since 2019 qualifies for the free download, stretching back to the iPhone 11 and the second generation iPhone SE. What most people installing it that week will not get is the software’s headline feature. Siri AI, the rebuilt assistant Apple has spent two years promising, only activates on iPhones built for Apple Intelligence, and a much shorter list of phones gets its fullest version.
TL;DR: iOS 27 launches free on Monday, September 14, and runs on any iPhone from the iPhone 11 onward. Siri AI, the software’s rebuilt assistant, only works on Apple Intelligence-enabled models starting with the iPhone 15 Pro, and its most advanced features are limited to five iPhones: the Duo, 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, Air, and 17 Pro. Everyone else gets the update without the feature it was built around.
iOS 27 lands September 14 on iPhones going back to 2019
Apple will push iOS 27 to every eligible iPhone as a free download on Monday, September 14, the company said in its September 9 Newsroom announcement.
The compatibility list stretches further back than most recent iOS releases, covering the iPhone 11, an inclusion that already has iPhone 11 owners asking how many more years of updates that phone has left, plus the second generation iPhone SE, according to MacRumors’ review of the full device list.
That is seven years of hardware receiving the same free update on the same day, a wider net than most software launches cast.
| iPhone group | iOS 27 on September 14 | Apple Intelligence and Siri AI |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 11 through iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone SE (2nd gen and later) | Yes | No |
| iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 | Yes | Yes, Siri AI beta in English |
| iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro | Yes | Yes, most advanced Siri AI features |
Siri AI needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone, not just iOS 27
Installing iOS 27 does not automatically switch on Siri AI. Apple ties the assistant to what its own release notes call an “Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language,” a requirement spelled out in the fine print of the same Newsroom announcement.
In practice that has meant iPhone 15 Pro or newer since Apple Intelligence first launched, which leaves every iPhone 14 and earlier running iOS 27 without any of it.
Siri AI in iOS 27 also starts narrower than the operating system itself. Apple says it is rolling out as a beta on September 14 for devices set to English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support arriving in October. Siri AI will not be available initially in the European Union, and Apple has set a minimum age of 13 to use it.
Only five iPhones get Siri AI’s fullest version
The most capable version of Siri AI, the one with the deepest personal context and onscreen awareness, is limited to five iPhones at launch: the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro, according to 9to5Mac’s breakdown of Apple’s announcement.
Apple has not explained the split publicly, but each of those five models runs the newest silicon the company has tuned its heaviest on-device Apple Intelligence tasks around.
That gap will be invisible to most owners until they compare notes with a friend running the same iOS version on older hardware.
Not every iOS 27 feature is gated this tightly. iPhone Handoff, which lets someone switch between two iPhones while keeping the same phone number, works at launch on any supported device, though only with T-Mobile in the U.S. and Telekom in Germany for now.
What this means for your Monday update
Nothing about installing iOS 27 changes based on which iPhone you own. The free update installs the same way on an iPhone 11 as it does on an iPhone 18 Pro Max.
What changes is what greets you afterward. Owners of iPhone 14 and earlier get a faster, more polished iOS 27 with the new Liquid Glass transparency slider and expanded child safety tools, minus any AI assistant work. Owners of Apple Intelligence-eligible models get Siri AI in English, in beta, subject to the daily usage limits Apple applies to server-side AI features.
For anyone comparing platforms, the split looks close to what Google did with its own rollout this year, where Android 17 vs iOS 27 updates both reach nearly every recent phone while the AI layer stays reserved for recent flagships.
Check Settings, then General, then Software Update on September 14 and the download appears regardless of which group your phone falls into. What appears next to it does not.
