YouTube has strictly enforced its anti-adblocker program. YouTube creators earn revenue from display ads that target viewers while streaming videos. However, ads are annoying, and most people implement ad-blocker extensions on their browsers to avoid them.
This action may be suitable for YouTube viewers but goes against YouTube’s terms and conditions, which affect the platform’s business format and hinder the earnings of the content creator. If you are not a YouTube Premium user(as a viewer), then it is a must to watch the ads before proceeding to stream a video.
Using an ad blocker will prompt a notification screen that cites a violation of YouTube’s terms, and unless the ad blocker is disabled or YouTube is whitelisted, you cannot stream any video.
In this guide, I have shared a couple of workarounds that you can use to enjoy watching videos on YouTube without having to sit through the annoyance of watching stupid ads.
We have also discussed this YouTube AdBlock issue in a video. I have linked the YouTube video here, which you can check out below.
Ways to Bypass YouTube AdBlock Detection
All of these workarounds work just fine, and most have been tested by me and team members on various occasions while surfing YouTube. You should implement them to enjoy streaming YouTube videos without watching display advertisements.
1. Set a Custom filter on uBlock Origin
Most YouTube users use the uBlock Origin extension on their browsers, but YouTube is now against using all sorts of ad blockers. Using uBlock Origin on your browser, you can set a custom filter and bypass adblocker detection.
Here are the complete steps for you.
- Go to the extensions management page on your browser.
- Locate the ad blocker and turn it off [if you are using anything other than uBlock Origin]
- Install uBlock Origin, provided your browser supports the extension.
- In the uBlock Origin settings, go to My Filters.
- Copy and paste this code fragment in the dark text input area of My Filters.
youtube.com##+js(set,yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)
- After putting in the code, click on Apply Changes and restart the browser.
Make sure to avoid using other ad blockers if uBlock Origin is already active and you used the above code fragment. Otherwise, this trick may not work.
NOTE: This trick was shared by a user on a subreddit, and we advise users to run filters on their browsers at their discretion. For any technical issues or otherwise, DigitBin won’t be responsible.
2. Close the Video Player and Reopen Video
This is a trick I use most of the time if I happen to watch YouTube videos on Chrome. Normally, YouTube will show you two ads back-to-back before playing the video title you clicked on from your search result. You can close the video player and reopen the video by clicking on its thumbnail. This way, you can avoid watching the ad.
- Open YouTube and search for your preferred video.
- Click on the video thumbnail to start streaming.
- Once the Ad starts appearing, instantly press the back button on the browser to close the video player.
- Again, click on the video thumbnail to stream the video.
- If the second ad appears, again, press the back button to go back to the search results/feed.
- Click on the video thumbnail to play the video.
Even if you don’t use an ad blocker, this trick will easily skip the YouTube ad instantly. You don’t even have to wait for the Skip Ad button to appear on the advertisement.
While I explained the whole trick in six steps, it won’t take you five seconds to perform it. Skip the annoying ads and continue watching the actual video content.
3. Temporarily Turn off Adblock Extension
You may turn off the ad blocker on your browser temporarily and turn it on again to evade ads on YouTube. Here is how it works.
- Open your browser extension settings.
- Turn off the ad blocker.
- Now, go to YouTube and play the video. Let the display ad show up.
- Go back to browser extension settings and turn on ad blocker.
- Now, on YouTube, you can enjoy streaming videos without the platform throwing exceptions regarding using an ad blocker.
NOTE: YouTube keeps updating its code regularly. So, if it knows that users are using this trick to bypass ads, it may patch it as well. As of now, this trick is working.
3. Watch YouTube Videos on Brave Browser
Brave Browser is one of the finest alternatives to watch YouTube without distracting ads. You don’t even need any third-party extension on Brave. Simply enabling the ad blocker in the Brave settings will do the trick.
- Install Brave Browser for PC.
- Go to brave://settings/shields
- Set the Trackers and Ad blocking to Standard or Aggressive depending on your requirement.
- Now, launch YouTube and watch videos.
You won’t see the banner ads on the YouTube homepage or the display ads on video content. Brave browser is also available for Android and iOS. With Brave, you can block ads and trackers on YouTube as well as other websites that serve ads.
4. Use the Ghostery Extension on Chrome
As of now, Chrome Webstore doesn’t allow the uBlock Origin extension to be added to Chrome. As an alternative, you can switch to the Ghostery extension to bypass/block ads on YouTube videos. I use it on my PC after uBlock
Although I have Firefox and Brave installed on my PC, I primarily use the Chrome browser. I refer to YouTube a lot for work-related information. So, to save time from watching stupid ads, I installed uBlock until Google banned it on Chrome.
I did my research and switched to Ghostery, which is a free extension found on Chrome Webstore and works just fine to block banner ads on the YouTube homepage and displays ads on YouTube videos.
- Go to Chrome Webstore to get the Ghostery extension.
- Press Add to Chrome.
- Relaunch the browser to block ads and trackers with Ghostery.
5. Switch to Firefox Browser with uBlock Origin
One of the oldest advice that the YouTube audience base always gets is to switch to Firefox browser on the PC. Install the uBlock Origin and bid goodbye to ads on YouTube.
- Download and install the Firefox browser.
- Launch Firefox and go to the Mozilla Add-ons repository.
- Search for uBlock Origin and add it to Firefox.
- You can manage the Firefox add-ons by going to the about:addons page.
With Firefox and uBlock Origin installed, you can now visit YouTube and enjoy videos without having to bear the disruptive advertisements.
6. Use YouTube Alternative Newpipe [Exclusive to Android]
If you prefer using YouTube from an Android device, switch to an alternative app called NewPipe. It is similar to YouTube except, NewPipe is free to use, you don’t get any ads, and it allows background play with the device locked, which are the two primary features available on YouTube Premium.
NewPipe has a similar UI to that of YouTube. Even the videos appear the same way it does on YouTube when you input a search query. NewPipe has been around in the tech domain for close to a decade now. I first used it back in 2017.
It is quite popular among hardcore YouTube users who are unable to pay for the premium subscription but wish to enjoy streaming videos without ad interruption. You won’t find NewPipe on the Play Store, It is a third-party app that is available and maintained independently. The app is pretty safe to use, and I have been using it since the Android 6.0 days.

7. Get a YouTube Premium Membership
This might be the least sought-after tip for these users who prefer to watch YouTube for free. My suggestion is to switch to YouTube Premium. It offers an ad-free streaming experience, background playback, and allows you to try out experimental features on YouTube that are yet to be released publicly.
The individual membership is offered at $13.99 per month, which is quite affordable compared to the family plan of YouTube Premium, which will cost you $22.99 per month.
Students can get YouTube Premium for as little as $8 per month, which is easy on the pocket. To know more about YouTube Premium, click here.
Bottom Line
When you are eager to watch a video on YouTube, display ads can ruin your experience and waste your time. Try the tricks and tips I have shared with you to stream YouTube videos without worrying about YouTube catching you using an ad blocker or any other workaround.
