Is the iPhone Duo worth buying at $1,999? Apple’s first foldable goes on sale October 23, and the first full reviews landed on October 21.
We have not tested it. What follows is built from Apple’s spec pages and published tests, mainly Tom’s Guide, set against the iPhone 18 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 8.
The useful question is not whether it is good. It is what the extra money buys, and what Apple quietly takes away to get there.
TL;DR: Tom’s Guide calls the iPhone Duo the best designed foldable it has tested, with a crease that is hard to see and performance level with the iPhone 18 Pro. It also costs $800 more than that phone, drops Face ID and the telephoto lens, and weighs 254g. Buy it if the big screen will be open daily. Otherwise the iPhone 18 Pro is the better phone for less.
Is the iPhone Duo worth buying at $1,999?
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, then climbs to $2,199, $2,599 and $3,199 for 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, according to Apple.
That is $100 above the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, which both start at $1,899, and $800 above the iPhone 18 Pro.
Charging adds a small tax. Apple’s 50 percent in 20 minutes figure needs a 60W-capable adapter, sold separately.

Brightness figures are manufacturer claims measured under each maker’s own conditions, so they are not directly comparable.
The crease is hard to find, but the matte screen has a cost
Tom’s Guide struggled to spot the crease even outdoors, and Engadget’s hands-on says you feel it before you see it.
The Fold 8’s crease is more visible, but that reviewer had three months with it against a week with the Duo. Our Fold 8 crease fix covers Samsung’s side.
The catch is the nano-texture finish, which mutes colors and shallows blacks. Tom’s Guide preferred the Fold 8 for movies.
On paper Google leads on size and brightness, at 8.0 inches and a claimed 3,600 nits peak, separate from its HDR figure. Tom’s Guide measured the Duo at 1,986 nits in SDR against 1,328 for the Fold 8.
No dedicated telephoto is the real cost at this price
The Duo has no dedicated telephoto, but its main camera gives 2x optical-quality zoom, and Tom’s Guide found it holds to about 8x, then blurs, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max stayed much sharper at 10x.
The Pixel 11 Pro Fold keeps a 5x telephoto, and Engadget’s reviewer also wanted a longer zoom lens on the Duo.
Elsewhere the Duo beats its spec sheet. In Tom’s Guide’s side-by-side shots, the Duo won low light, ultrawide and portrait blur against the Fold 8, which took macro.
A bigger screen does not make up for missing zoom. People who mostly shoot close and wide will barely miss it.
What $800 over the iPhone 18 Pro actually buys
Not speed. Tom’s Guide’s Geekbench 7 single-core scores were 4,007 for the Duo and 4,022 for the iPhone 18 Pro, and both use the A20 Pro.
The money buys a second, larger screen. It costs you Face ID, the 4x telephoto and 43g, plus likely some stamina, as the larger Pro Max beat it in Tom’s Guide’s web test, which did not cover the regular Pro.
Sustained performance is closer than a thin foldable body suggests, at 75.9 percent against 79 for the Pro Max and 72 for the Fold 8.
So the spec sheet gives little else for $800.
Battery is fine, weight is the catch
Apple rates the Duo at up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen, and the 4,883mAh energy label is the capacity figure behind it.
In Tom’s Guide’s web test it lasted 13 hours 20 minutes, against 10 hours 6 minutes for the Fold 8 (12 hours 19 minutes in an earlier test) and 17 hours 31 minutes for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer ended a mixed-use day with 40 percent left.
Weight is where the Fold 8 wins outright, at 201g against 254g, and 9.7mm folded against 11.3mm. Samsung’s route there is in our Fold 8 weight breakdown.
Software is where the first-generation feel shows
Apple’s Split View runs two apps side by side, while Tom’s Guide notes the Fold 8 can run three or more.
Apps that were not updated look worst, with black bars in Disney+ and The Weather Channel. Turn the phone upright and Split View drops to one app until you rotate it back.
Reviewers disagree on Touch ID. Tom’s Guide called it a downgrade from Face ID with extra unlock lag, while Engadget thought it beat the side sensors on rival foldables.
Apple lists Apple Pencil (USB-C) support for both screens, but marks it as coming later this year.

Who should buy it and who should skip it
Buy it if you would open the inner screen daily for Slack, spreadsheets, video or split-screen work, and can live without a telephoto.
Not because the display is bad. Because messaging, browsing and photos barely use what the extra $800 pays for.
