The iPhone 18 Pro costs $100 more than the 17 Pro, and the camera is where it shows

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: Specs, Price, Camera

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, which is $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro cost at launch. In this iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro comparison, Apple’s own spec pages show where that money goes: a variable aperture main camera, a faster A20 Pro chip and quicker charging. The screen stays at 6.3 inches. If you already own a 17 Pro, the question is whether a new lens and a few extra hours of battery are worth the step up.

TL;DR: The iPhone 18 Pro adds a variable aperture main camera, a seventh GPU core, 36 hours of video playback and 15 minute fast charging, plus a 2TB option. It also costs $100 more at the 256GB tier. The display size is unchanged, so most 17 Pro owners can reasonably wait.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: what changed on paper

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro tech specs list the A20 Pro chip with a 6 core CPU and a 7 core GPU. The iPhone 17 Pro specs show the A19 Pro with a 6 core GPU, so the CPU layout is the same and the graphics side grows by one core.

Apple’s 18 Pro page claims up to 40% better sustained performance than the 17 Pro. That is a vendor figure, and it will only matter if you game or edit video for long stretches.

Apple’s 18 Pro page also lists a redesigned Dynamic Island that can show up to three Live Activities at once. If you track a flight, a timer and a ride share together, that is the kind of small daily detail a table cannot capture.

The table shows a spec sheet that moves in small, steady steps, with the camera as the exception.

The variable aperture camera is the real upgrade

The iPhone 17 Pro main camera has a fixed ƒ/1.78 lens. The 18 Pro’s 48MP Fusion Main camera can move between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0, according to Apple.

In practice, a wider opening lets in more light at a dim restaurant table, while a narrower one keeps more of a scene sharp in bright daylight. Fixed lenses have never offered that choice, and you may notice it the first time a night shot stops looking soft at the edges. That is the change most spec comparisons will bury under chip numbers.

The telephoto side looks familiar. Both phones list a 4x, 100 mm, ƒ/2.8 lens, and Apple’s pages describe 8x optical quality zoom on each.

Battery and charging gains are measurable but modest

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback, against 33 hours for the iPhone 17 Pro. Streamed video is rated at 33 hours versus 30 hours.

Three extra hours will not change your day. You would likely still charge at night, though a long travel day leaves a little more cushion before you hunt for an outlet.

Wired charging to 50% takes about 15 minutes on the 18 Pro with a 60W capable adapter. The 17 Pro needs 20 minutes with a 40W adapter, so you may need a new charger to see the full five minute gain.

Price, storage and who should upgrade

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro store page lists $1,199 for 256GB, $1,399 for 512GB, $1,799 for 1TB and $2,399 for 2TB. The iPhone 17 Pro started at $1,099 for 256GB in the U.S., per Apple’s 2025 announcement.

That $100 gap, which we covered in our look at the iPhone 18 Pro price increase, buys you the camera and a bigger storage ceiling. It does not buy a bigger screen or a redesign.

If your 17 Pro still holds a full day of charge and its photos satisfy you, keeping it is a sound choice. Owners of older Pro models, or anyone who shoots a lot in dim rooms, will feel more of the difference. Waiting a year costs most owners little beyond the camera.
