Best Abandonware games I downloaded in 2026

Rediscover the best abandonware games in 2026. Classic titles you can legally download and play today for free, packed with nostalgia.

I always get frustrated trying to track down games on the internet that I loved playing as a child. Today, most retro PC games cannot be found on any official distribution platforms like Steam or GOG.

I wonder if the title I was looking for is gone for good?

The game’s developers have shut the shop, and the publishing team doesn’t exist anymore. Or worse, the license for the title was never renewed.

What became the fate of my favorite childhood PC games? Well, I realized they have turned into abandonware. They are very much available, just not through official channels.

There are dedicated sites where these old PC games are available to download to your device or play online. Guess what? I can enjoy these games without paying anything.

Well, except for specific old titles revived by Steam and GOG, which do cost you money to buy, download, and play, abandonware games on most sites are completely free to use.

The concept of Abandonware

Most of the retro games have no active developer team, publisher, copyright enforcement, or any planned repackaging.

These games are usually not updated or patched in any way. Basically, these games have been abandoned.

Abandoned by the developers? Correct, but not by the die-hard fans whose childhood was spent playing this.

This is where platforms like MyAbandonware, AbandonwareDOS, and Abandonia come into the scene, which preserve the retro games and make them available on their sites.

I had a misconception that it is only on the torrent sites, or through closed Reddit communities, that one may find links to old popular games that are no longer maintained.

I was blown away by the concept of Abandonware to preserve old games, and the fact that in 2026, there are so many takers for the Abandonware.

Lately, I have been exploring a lot of old PC games on Windows 11.

So, I rounded up 7 popular Abandonware that I downloaded legally in 2026. In fact, anyone can download and play the games.

NOTE: Before installing them on the PC, I suggest thoroughly scanning the game files for malware.

Project IGI(2000)

play project IGI

I grew up playing this awesome FPS, which was released with two separate storylines. The player controls the character named David Jones, a British SAS agent who works for a counter-terrorism agency called IGI.

The first one came out way back in 2000, and an unrelated sequel, Project IGI-Covert Strike, followed up in 2003.

Both of them were popular games from the early 200s and continue to have a great fan following till today.

While it had a massive success, with its developer studio shutting down, the franchise never saw a reboot. Currently, the project IGI and its only sequel have become abandonware.

Project IGI and Project IGI 2: Covert Strike can be downloaded from MyAbandonware.

 Prince of Persia (1990)

prince of persia 1989 gameplay

Released in 1989 for Apple II and then in 1990 for DOS, Prince of Persia, or PoP as it was known, was a famous survival game where the protagonist had to cross various hurdles to complete the level.

I have played the Prince of Persia 1989 and its sequel, Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame.

They are very engaging games, and both of them were developed by Broderbund Studios, which no longer updates, maintains, or supports the games.

So, these games have become Abandonware, which can be found on MyAbandonware.

Roadrash (1996)

download Roadrash 1996

Roadrash was one of the coolest motorcycle racing games of its time. Launched in the 1996, this arcade game was about racing with motor bikes on the busiest American roads while dodging traffic, pedestrians, and cops.

It had different game modes. One involves directly picking any of the six circuits and starting a race that can span up to six levels in increasing phases of gameplay difficulty.

Another mode involves a systematic race across all circuits through six levels, involving an in-game reward, which the players can use to upgrade their bikes.

It is such a fun game, and I still have it on my Windows 11 PC. Roadrash 1996 runs like a charm.

The game is no longer being sold, updated, or maintained. Also, the production and design team responsible for this game is no longer functional.

Thus, it can be classified as an abandonware. It is available on MyAbandonware. I have also seen it on the Internet Archive.

Dangerous Dave (1990)

dangerous dave old PC game

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, platform games were very common on Windows XP. One such game was Dangerous Dave, which we simply referred to as Dave.

The gameplay involves helping the playable character cross the obstacles to find a way into the next level while scoring points and getting special objects.

Dangerous Dave was similar to Mario in terms of gameplay and level design. Its designer had accepted this fact. The game was designed for MS-DOS and Apple II.

The original title is called Dangerous Dave in the Deserted Pirate’s Hideout.

It is no longer supported, distributed, or maintained, thus making it an abandonware, although the title may have an active copyright, but it has seemingly not been enforced.

That’s the reason I could find it on MyAbandonware, and I could download it for free.

Now, that’s a retro game which I think will still offer amazing gameplay on a modern Windows PC.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

How about a superhero action game? Well, it was hard for me to believe that a successful game like X-Men Origins: Wolverine ended up as abandonware. That’s true.

It is now available for free download. The game is not too old compared to the other classics I have included in the list. It was launched in 2009.

In 2014, Activision, its former publisher, denied a renewal of the license, thus causing the removal of the title from all digital stores. That’s how the game ended up as abandonware.

This list of abandonware games will be incomplete without mentioning a racing game.

Well, we got the Need for Speed II SE, which is no longer sold or supported by its original publishers, EA Sports.

The game is now available for free download on abandonware sites.

It has some really good graphics due to the inclusion of 3Dx, which enhanced the graphics of the game compared to the original Need for Speed 2.

Dragon Ninja Saga

Dragon Ninja Saga

This game is one of my all-time favorites that came out in 2001, and its developer studio shut down soon after. It was released as freeware and has now turned into abandonware.

The gameplay is simple. The player controls the main character, a ninja called Red Lotus, whose wife has been kidnapped by an evil sorcerer.

The protagonist has to fight his way through four levels, facing shuriken-throwing ninjas, dragons hiding in caves, high fountains, and beating enemy bosses.

The game has no save option. If you lose all HP, you start again from the first level.

I absolutely loved the theme music and the background music of the game. Also, this game has nice graphics, even though it is a title from 2001.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Abandonware I downloaded not running on my PC?

Some old games were designed to be played on PCs with 16-bit architecture. So, on modern PCs with 32-bit and 64-bit architecture, they may not install/run unless modification patches are added, which can be found on the same page as other downloadables.

Is it safe to download an Abandonware?

Always check website security status through site reputation checkers and scan for malware on your PC after downloading the files associated with an Abandonware.

Generally, when getting from popular platforms, the files are safe to use.

Why do old Abandonware games on Steam and GOG cost money?

This happens because Steam and GOG have acquired the legal rights to the titles available on their platform.

They have repackaged the game to be played on modern computer systems. So, for maintaining, providing the old title, they charge a fee.

A good example is Delta Force 2, which is now available on GOG and can be purchased with a one-time fee.

In the quest for Abandonware

Gaming preservation matters. These titles not only represent thousands of hours of creative work but also signify the countless memories associated with those who played them.

I will continue finding Abandonware and playing them. In a way, it will keep the spirit of retro PC gaming alive.

While most may dismiss old software as unplayable relics, I gave these retro games a shot. I realized that some things age better than I had expected.
