Switch to Another Google Account
According to some Chrome browser users, the issue was magically solved when they switched to an alternate Gmail account to use YouTube after facing the issue with YouTube comments appearing black.
While they were signed into YouTube with the alternate Gmail account and typed a YouTube comment, it would appear in white font on the dark backdrop.
If you have an alternate Gmail account, you can add it to YouTube and sign in to the platform to watch videos.
- Go to YouTube.
- Click the account icon.
- Select Switch Account.
- Within that, click Add Account.
- You will be redirected to a Google account sign-in page, where you can log in to your existing alternate Gmail account or create a new one.
Most people out there have more than one Gmail account. Even if you have one Gmail ID, creating a second or third Gmail account is easily possible. So, give this trick a try before attempting anything else.
Type Comment as Reply
I came across an interesting perspective from a netizen, which turned out to be a nice workaround for the issue of the YouTube comment appearing dark.
According to this user’s observation, the text appears in black while typing a comment. However, if you type a reply to some other comment, the text appears normally with white font.
So, the trick here is not to type a comment, as you cannot see it due to the text appearing black.
Instead, type your comment as a reply(while typing text appears white) to any other comment under that YouTube video, but do not post the reply yet.
Copy that reply(basically what you wanted to comment) and paste it in the comment panel, and press Comment to publish it.
Change Color Settings in the Firefox Browser
Users on Firefox browser visiting YouTube and typing the comments only to see it appear in black text can follow this useful troubleshooting tip.
In the Firefox settings, you have to disable the system color and change the text color to white if it is set to black. Here are the detailed steps for that.
- Launch Firefox browser and type about:preferences in the URL.
- In the Firefox settings, scroll to the Colors tab and click Manage Colors.
- Change the Text color from black to white.
- Also, uncheck the option for System Colors.
- Click OK to save the changes.
Now, visit YouTube and try typing a comment under any video. Check while typing the comment, if the text color is still black or it now appears white on the dark background.
Add a Custom Filter on uBlock Origin.
If you are using the uBlock Origin extension on your browser, you can create a custom filter. That will fix the issue with the YouTube comment appearing in black while typing.
This trick has reportedly worked for various users who were facing the issue with typing YouTube comments on Mozilla, Edge, Brave, or Opera.
- Open Firefox and go to the add-ons section by typing about:addons in the URL bar.
- Click the menu button beside uBlock Origin and select Options.
- Switch to the tab MyFilters.
- Add the following piece of code.
youtube.com##div.style-scope.yt-formatted-string:style(color:white!important;)
- Click Apply Changes to confirm.

NOTE: Chrome no longer supports uBlock Origin. So, this trick won’t work on the Chrome browser. However, it should work on other browsers such as Mozilla, Brave, Opera, etc.
Update the YouTube App
If you are seeing the YouTube comment in black text while using the app on a smartphone, it could be due to an older version of the app. Not updating an app timely manner can cause bugs resulting from incompatibility with the system OS.
If using Android,
- Go to the Play Store app.
- Tap the connected Gmail account and select Manage Apps and Devices.
- Go to Updates Available.
- Press the Update button next to YouTube if it has a new app build ready to be installed.
For iOS users,
- Launch the App Store and tap the connected Apple ID account.
- Scroll down to check if YouTube has a new app build available.
- Press Update to install.
Rollback YouTube App to an Older Build
If you started seeing the color bug with YouTube comments appearing dark after updating the YouTube app, roll back to the previous build by uninstalling the current version.
- Press and hold the YouTube app icon.
- Tap the ‘i button to access the App Info section.
- Press the overflow menu button at the top right corner in the App Info.
- Tap on Uninstall Updates.
