How to Fix YouTube Comment Showing Black Text in Dark Mode?

When YouTube is set to dark mode, typing text is also in black color. Here is the troubleshooting tips for the YouTube comment text appearing in black while using dark mode.

YouTube comments are a fun way to interact with videos and shorts. However, typing a comment in the comment box under a video can get challenging if the text that you are typing turns dark.

A majority of people use YouTube on their devices in dark mode. Normally, while typing a comment, the words appear in white with a dark backdrop.

Users often encounter a strange glitch when dark mode is activated in the browser or the YouTube app. When users type text in the YouTube comment box, it appears in a dark font, making it difficult for them to see what they are typing.

This guide explains the possible reason behind YouTube comments appearing black while the device/app/browser is set on dark theme. Also, I have shared several working troubleshooting methods that have helped users fix the problem.

Why does the YouTube comment appear in Black Font?

It is only when you type the comment, the words appear in black, but once you publish the comment, they appear in white. This issue of YouTube comments appearing in black text happens primarily to users streaming YouTube videos on a PC.

Although the issue has been experienced mostly by Chrome users, folks on other browsers have also complained of the same problem. It may happen due to bugs in the YouTube UI when Google rolls out a new update for the video sharing platform.

If you are facing the same issue with dark-coloured comments on the YouTube app, there may be some technical issues with the current build of the app you are using.

Fixes for YouTube Comment Black Text in Dark Mode

Use these troubleshooting tips to view the YouTube comment in white if it appears black while typing.

Switch to Another Google Account

According to some Chrome browser users, the issue was magically solved when they switched to an alternate Gmail account to use YouTube after facing the issue with YouTube comments appearing black.

While they were signed into YouTube with the alternate Gmail account and typed a YouTube comment, it would appear in white font on the dark backdrop.

If you have an alternate Gmail account, you can add it to YouTube and sign in to the platform to watch videos.

  1. Go to YouTube.
  2. Click the account icon.
  3. Select Switch Account.

Most people out there have more than one Gmail account. Even if you have one Gmail ID, creating a second or third Gmail account is easily possible. So, give this trick a try before attempting anything else.

Type Comment as Reply

I came across an interesting perspective from a netizen, which turned out to be a nice workaround for the issue of the YouTube comment appearing dark.

According to this user’s observation, the text appears in black while typing a comment. However, if you type a reply to some other comment, the text appears normally with white font.

So, the trick here is not to type a comment, as you cannot see it due to the text appearing black.

Instead, type your comment as a reply(while typing text appears white) to any other comment under that YouTube video, but do not post the reply yet.reply to YouTube comment

Copy that reply(basically what you wanted to comment) and paste it in the comment panel, and press Comment to publish it.

Change Color Settings in the Firefox Browser

Users on Firefox browser visiting YouTube and typing the comments only to see it appear in black text can follow this useful troubleshooting tip.

In the Firefox settings, you have to disable the system color and change the text color to white if it is set to black. Here are the detailed steps for that.

  1. Launch Firefox browser and type about:preferences in the URL.
  2. In the Firefox settings, scroll to the Colors tab and click Manage Colors.
    manage colors in Firefox
  3. Change the Text color from black to white.

Now, visit YouTube and try typing a comment under any video. Check while typing the comment, if the text color is still black or it now appears white on the dark background.

Add a Custom Filter on uBlock Origin.

If you are using the uBlock Origin extension on your browser, you can create a custom filter. That will fix the issue with the YouTube comment appearing in black while typing.

This trick has reportedly worked for various users who were facing the issue with typing YouTube comments on Mozilla, Edge, Brave, or Opera.

  1. Open Firefox and go to the add-ons section by typing about:addons in the URL bar.
  2. Click the menu button beside uBlock Origin and select Options.
    manage ublock origin settings
  3. Switch to the tab MyFilters.
  4. Add the following piece of code.
    youtube.com##div.style-scope.yt-formatted-string:style(color:white!important;)
  5. Click Apply Changes to confirm.

Now, visit the YouTube website and see if the comments appear in white text while typing.

NOTE: Chrome no longer supports uBlock Origin. So, this trick won’t work on the Chrome browser. However, it should work on other browsers such as Mozilla, Brave, Opera, etc.
