Star Trek Strange New Worlds season 4 is here, and the countdown to the end has started

Every season of Strange New Worlds premiere week, I end up rewatching the same three episodes from season 1 the night before: the Gorn one, the musical one, the one where Una’s secret comes out.

It is a strange ritual for a show that mostly tells standalone stories, easy to fit around whatever else is on this week’s streaming release calendar.

The upcoming Season 4 has a heavier one attached to it this time, since this is the second-to-last season the show will ever get.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds season 4 premieres Thursday, July 23, 2026 on Paramount+, with new episodes releasing weekly every Thursday through the finale on September 24. That gives this season ten episodes, the same length as the three before it, though season 5 next year will run only six as the show wraps up entirely.

TL;DR: Strange New Worlds season 4 starts July 23, 2026 on Paramount+, releasing all ten episodes weekly through September 24. Almost the entire cast returns, including Paul Wesley as Kirk in a bigger role, and the season includes a fully puppet episode from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. This is the show’s second-to-last season, with a six-episode final run confirmed for 2027.

Strange New Worlds season 4 release date

Strange New Worlds season 4 starts July 23 and runs one new episode every Thursday for ten weeks, ending September 24.

That schedule was confirmed at CCXP Mexico in April, where Strange New Worlds cast members Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, and Paul Wesley took the stage to announce it.

Ten episodes is standard for this show. What changes is what comes after. Paramount confirmed back in June of last year that season 5 will be the final season, and it will run just six episodes as a bridge into the original 1960s series timeline.

Knowing that going in changes how I am going to watch this one, less casually than seasons 2 and 3. All three previous seasons, 30 episodes total, are already streaming on Paramount+, so there is time to catch up before the 23rd if you have fallen behind.

What happens in Strange New Worlds season 4?

The Strange New Worlds season 4 synopsis keeps things intentionally vague, promising the Enterprise crew will face inner demons and external threats while meeting new characters and reuniting with old ones.

Most episodes will likely remain standalone stories, the format the show has used since season 1 to echo the original 1960s series and The Next Generation.

Confirmed elements include a full puppet episode built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, something showrunner Akiva Goldsman teased as early as March 2024.

There are also visuals in the trailer of Pike on horseback on an alien planet and something that looks a lot like dinosaurs, according to Wikipedia’s season summary of press coverage.

I went into season 3 expecting the usual mix of tones and still was not ready for how far it swung between the horror episode and the musical one.

Season 4 sounds like it may do the same thing again, cowboys and dinosaurs in the same ten episode run, which is either the show’s biggest strength or its most divisive habit depending on who you ask.

Who is in the Star Trek Strange New Worlds season 4 cast

The cast is almost entirely unchanged from season 3.

Anson Mount returns as Captain Pike, alongside Rebecca Romijn as Una, Ethan Peck as Spock, Christina Chong as La’an, Jess Bush as Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura, Melissa Navia as Ortegas, Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga, and Martin Quinn as Scotty.

Paul Wesley returns as James T. Kirk in a bigger capacity than his season 3 guest spot, and the trailer leans hard into the Kirk and Spock dynamic, which tracks given where the show is headed before it hands off to the original timeline. Carol Kane also returns as Pelia.

The one absence worth noting is Melanie Scrofano, who played Captain Marie Batel since season 1. Her storyline concluded in the season 3 finale, and according to Men’s Journal, her exit does not carry a major ripple effect into season 4 despite Pike’s arc with her ending on a heavy note.

Where to watch Strange New Worlds season 4?

Strange New Worlds streams exclusively on Paramount+, with plans starting at $8.99 a month. There is no separate purchase option and no free ad-supported route to this specific show, even though Paramount+ does carry a lower-cost ad tier for its general library.

If you already subscribe for other CBS or Paramount content, this one is already included. Worth knowing before you commit though: Paramount+ is also in the middle of a merger with HBO Max that could eventually change pricing and app structure, though nothing changes for current subscribers before that deal closes.

The road ahead as the end draws near

Knowing this is the second-to-last season changes the way certain scenes are probably going to land, especially anything involving Pike, whose entire arc has been shadowed by what audiences already know happens to him in the original series timeline.

Season 5 will run only six episodes and functions as a direct bridge into the classic 1960s show, according to reporting from TVLine on the season 5 renewal announcement last June. That means season 4 is likely the last real chance for the show to tell big standalone stories before the final stretch narrows its focus.
