The touchscreen MacBook Pro could ship 1.5 million units in 2027, but the $2,899 price may slow early demand

OLED MacBook Pro Shipments: 1.2M to 1.5M in 2027

TrendForce expects Apple to ship between 1.2 million and 1.5 million touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro units in 2027, according to a press release published October 29, 2026. The forecast lands a day after Apple announced the machine, so it is the first outside estimate of how many people will actually buy one.

For anyone eyeing the $2,899 starting price, the more useful part is the caution attached to it. These OLED MacBook Pro shipments depend on a single panel supplier and on buyers who already own a laptop that works.

TL;DR: TrendForce estimates 1.2 to 1.5 million OLED MacBook Pro units in 2027. It says the premium starting price and the launch alongside mini-LED models could temper near-term replacement demand. Samsung Display is the exclusive panel supplier, which keeps rivals out for now. Apple says availability begins November 6.

What TrendForce expects from OLED MacBook Pro shipments

TrendForce puts 2027 shipments of the new MacBook Pro at 1.2 million to 1.5 million units. It also forecasts OLED notebook shipments overall to grow nearly 40% in 2026 and by more than 40% in 2027, while the total notebook market contracts for a second straight year.

Until now, Lenovo, HP and ASUS have driven OLED laptop demand, TrendForce says. It expects Apple’s entry to push more brands to prioritize OLED models, which would change what shoppers see on Windows laptops too. The forecast also comes with a warning about price.

Why the $2,899 price could slow early demand

Apple’s announcement lists the 14-inch model with an M5 Pro chip at $2,899, or $2,749 for education. The 16-inch M5 Pro starts at $3,399, and the M5 Max versions run from $4,499 to $4,799. Apple says the touch sensor is built into the display panel rather than layered on top.

TrendForce calls the starting price premium and says the launch alongside existing mini-LED models could temper near-term replacement demand. Picture someone whose current MacBook Pro still runs fine. Touch and deeper blacks are real changes, but that buyer has an easy reason to wait.

Apple also announced a 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro from $1,999 for the same November 6 date, covered in our M6 MacBook Pro pricing report. That gives shoppers a cheaper new MacBook Pro to compare against.

A single supplier shapes how fast Apple can scale

Samsung Display is the exclusive panel supplier, according to TrendForce, which says Phase 1 of its G8.6 A6 line at the Asan campus in South Korea is dedicated to Apple. The panel’s 254 pixels per inch makes production very demanding, the firm adds.

The cost of meeting Apple’s specifications is also a barrier for rivals. LG Display, BOE and TCL CSOT are mainly targeting supply positions for a future OLED MacBook Air, TrendForce says.

One supplier is also one point of dependence, though TrendForce does not say the line limits 2027 volume. That tension between a premium price and a single source for the panel is the detail most coverage will skip.

What this means if you are choosing a MacBook Pro

Pre-orders opened October 28, and Apple says availability begins Friday, November 6. A forecast of 1.2 to 1.5 million units says little about your own decision, and it is one research firm’s estimate rather than a sales figure.

If your current Mac still does the job, TrendForce’s own caution suggests plenty of buyers will weigh the same thing. Our PROLED display breakdown covers what the new panel changes, which is the better question to settle before the price.
