Apple Intelligence reaches China in iOS 27.3, but Siri AI stays home

Apple Intelligence in China Arrives With iOS 27.3

Apple Intelligence is coming to China with iOS 27.3, and Apple says testing opens November 4, 2026 in the next iOS developer beta, with the official release set for December. It is a first wave only: a set of iPhone features built on Apple’s existing tools, plus Alibaba’s Qwen for some requests, and none of the newer Siri AI work announced at WWDC 2026.

If you live outside China, nothing changes on your phone. If you buy or gift iPhones for family there, the details below decide who gets what.

TL;DR: Apple’s China newsroom says iOS 27.3 brings a first set of Apple Intelligence features to iPhone in China in December, with testing from November 4. Qwen from Alibaba powers some Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence requests. Siri AI is not included, and iPad and Mac wait on approvals.

What Apple Intelligence in China includes at launch

Apple’s Chinese newsroom post lists the launch features, and the list is longer than the “no Siri AI” headline suggests. It covers Live Translation, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Clean Up, Genmoji, natural-language search in Photos, and Memory Movies.

Mail gets Priority Messages, summaries and Smart Replies. Notifications get summaries, Priority Notifications and a Reduce Interruptions Focus, and Notes and Phone get transcription and summaries.

AreaWhat Apple lists for China
CommunicationLive Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone
WritingRewrite, proofread, summarize, and generate text in Writing Tools
PhotosClean Up, Genmoji, natural-language search, Memory Movies
Mail and notificationsPriority Messages, summaries, Smart Replies, Priority Notifications
SiriTyped conversations with better understanding and context

Anyone who has used these on a US iPhone will recognize most of them. The Siri item is the one that is different, because it is a typing-first upgrade rather than the new assistant.

How Qwen fits into Apple Intelligence in China

Apple says it partnered with Alibaba to add Qwen support to some Apple Intelligence experiences. Qwen can be used in Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, including understanding text and images, so you can ask Siri about photos and documents such as PDFs and presentations.

Using it requires signing in to a Qwen account or using Sign in with Apple. That extra step is the practical difference from a phone that relies only on Apple’s own tools.

For most people the sign-in will be a one-time prompt. Still, it makes clear that part of this experience depends on a partner’s service, not only on the phone.

Which iPhones get it, and what is missing

Core features arrive in iOS 27.3 for iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone Air. Siri and the device language must be set to English or Simplified Chinese.

Live Translation with AirPods needs AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 or later, or AirPods Max 2, on the latest firmware and paired with a supported iPhone. Support on other platforms follows only after the necessary approvals, so an iPad or Mac owner in China has no date yet.

That gap is the detail most coverage will skip. The release is real, but it covers one device family and leaves out the Siri AI work Apple announced at WWDC 2026.

What to check before the December release

Apple’s China Apple Intelligence page says the core features arrive later this year with iOS 27.3. It also marks Clean Up as Beta and notes that some Visual Intelligence features may be limited by language or region.

If you set up a phone for someone in China, check the model first, then the language settings. A phone set to any other language will not see the features, even on supported hardware.

Testing starts November 4, so early hands-on impressions should appear before the December release. Treat those as a preview, since beta software can change before it ships.
