iOS 27 is official and the iPhone 11 compatibility leak was wrong

Apple officially unveiled iOS 27 at WWDC 2026 today, and the first detail confirmed was that a widely shared May leak had it wrong. Apple confirmed at WWDC 2026 that iOS 27 supports every device currently running iOS 26, including the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and second-generation iPhone SE.

Weibo leaker Instant Digital, whose compatibility list circulated across Apple news coverage in May, had named all three as cut from iOS 27 support. The official list says the opposite. For anyone who made upgrade decisions based on that prediction, the picture changed today.

TL;DR: iOS 27 was officially confirmed at WWDC 2026 with support for all devices running iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 series. The update brings Siri AI, a rebuilt standalone Siri chatbot with conversation history and on-screen awareness, along with app launches up to 30% faster, photos loading up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers  up to 80% faster. Developer beta is available today. The stable release ships in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro.

What Apple confirmed at WWDC today

The confirmed feature list centers on Siri and platform performance. Siri has been officially rebranded as Siri AI and runs as a standalone app. Back-and-forth conversation with history synced across iPhone, iPad, and Mac via iCloud is confirmed.

On-screen awareness and personal context, features Apple first previewed at WWDC 2024, are part of this release. The assistant appears inside the Dynamic Island when triggered, with a chat-ready interface accessible from any screen.

Performance numbers Apple cited on stage: app launches up to up to 30% faster, photos appearing in your library up to up to 70% faster than iOS 26, and AirDrop transfers up to up to 80% faster. An updated CPU scheduler improves responsiveness during everyday multitasking. These gains apply across the full supported device range, not just newer hardware.

Visual Intelligence also receives a Siri mode inside the Camera app. The camera can now analyze real-world objects and take actions directly from what the lens sees, including recognizing nutritional information and contact details.

The iPhone 11 story and why the leak was wrong

The Instant Digital leak from late April named four specific devices as cut from iOS 27: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and iPhone SE 2nd generation. The reasoning behind the prediction aligned with Apple’s historical pattern. The iPhone 11 family runs the A13 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 12 and later use A14 and newer. Apple has aligned OS drops with chipset thresholds in previous cycles, and A13 was a plausible cutoff candidate.

Apple’s WWDC announcement did not follow that logic. iOS 27 supports every device running iOS 26, and the call appears directly connected to the performance focus of this release. The rebuilt CPU scheduler and the responsiveness improvements are engineered to run better on older hardware, which gave Apple room to extend support rather than restrict it.

The nuance worth keeping: the compatibility confirmation does not mean every feature reaches every device. Advanced Siri AI capabilities tied to Apple Intelligence require newer hardware. iPhone 11 owners get iOS 27 and the performance improvements. They do not get the full Siri AI conversational experience. The update is real. The hardware divide is also real.

What Siri AI actually changes in daily use

The structural shift with Siri AI is from a command interface to a conversational one. Every previous version of Siri treated each query as independent.

The rebuilt version maintains context across a session and can continue a thread started on iPhone on a Mac or iPad through iCloud sync. On-screen awareness means Siri can read what is currently on your display and act on it without you describing the content.

The new standalone Siri app stores conversation history in a searchable, iCloud-synced log. You can revisit a past Siri session the same way you would reopen a chat in any messaging app. For the Siri AI architecture and Gemini backend details, the earlier piece covers what the underlying model actually is.

One regional restriction applies. Apple confirmed in a Newsroom post that Siri AI features on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 will not be available in the European Union at launch due to the Digital Markets Act. EU users will have access to Siri AI on macOS 27 and watchOS 27 only, until regulatory compliance work is resolved.

The performance numbers are the headline for most users

Apple’s specific figures: 30% faster app launches, 70% faster photo library loading, 80% faster AirDrop. The updated CPU scheduler changes how workload is distributed across processor cores, which shows most noticeably when switching between apps or loading a photo-heavy album.

These numbers apply across the full supported device range, not just flagship hardware. For iPhone 11 through iPhone 15 owners who are not in the Apple Intelligence tier, these improvements are the most direct upgrade iOS 27 delivers.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman described this approach in pre-WWDC reporting as Apple’s closest equivalent to a Snow Leopard release, a cycle where engineering investment went into refining what exists rather than adding new surfaces.

What to expect between now and September

The iOS 27 developer beta is live today for enrolled Apple Developer Program members. Developer betas carry compatibility risks around third-party apps and are not suitable for primary devices.

The public beta follows four to six weeks after the first developer beta, based on Apple’s historical pattern, putting it in mid-to-late July 2026.

The stable release ships in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. If you owned an iPhone 11 or any device that appeared in the Instant Digital drop list, no immediate action is needed. The official compatibility confirmation means your device is in the iOS 27 update path.
