iFixit has given the iPhone Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, the highest the repair site has awarded any foldable phone so far. The number comes from its iPhone Duo teardown, and it comes with a catch: the inner screen and hinge, the two parts that make a foldable a foldable, drag the score down.
If you picked one up when it went on sale, the useful question is not how clever the engineering is. It is what happens when something breaks.
TL;DR: iFixit rates the iPhone Duo a provisional 5 out of 10 for repairability, ahead of every foldable it has scored. Batteries release cleanly with electricity, and the cover layer swaps without touching the OLED. The inner display and hinge cost it the most points, and iFixit is still waiting on replacement parts before the score becomes final.
Why iPhone Duo repairability beats other foldables
The iPhone Duo repairability score of 5 out of 10 is provisional because replacement parts were still pending when iFixit published, with Apple’s self-service program expected to supply them soon. Even so, it clears every foldable iFixit has scored before.
Much of the credit goes to the battery. The phone carries two cells of 7.5 Wh and 11.6 Wh, 19.1 Wh in total, and each sits on adhesive that releases when you apply power to its tabs, using a VoltClip and FixHub or a 9V battery. Both cells came out cleanly with minimal residue and no prying, and metal shells protect them if the release fails and solvents become necessary. iFixit calls it the best battery removal it has seen in a foldable.
That is a very different afternoon from the usual glue-and-heat routine. It also hints at where Apple spent its effort.
| Part | What iFixit found |
|---|---|
| Batteries | Two cells, 19.1 Wh total, electrically releasable adhesive |
| Outer display | Came off intact, including its plastic frame |
| Inner display trim | Came off intact, unlike the Galaxy Z Fold8 trim, which crumbled |
| Nano-texture layer | Sits on a flexible polymer cover layer that can be replaced without replacing the OLED |
| Entry screws | Four pentalobe screws, versus two on standard iPhones |
| Hinge | Fixing it means removing the flexible display and its supports |
The screen is where the points go
iFixit says the inner display and hinge cause the biggest deduction. The matte nano-texture sits on a replaceable polymer layer, which is a smart way to protect the OLED underneath, but taking it off makes the crease more visible, arguably more than on the Galaxy Z Fold8.
The hinge is the harder job. It uses linked metal joints, springs and synchronization gears, and iFixit found it crunched after glow dust got in. Less dust reached the Duo than the Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, but enough did to matter, and cleaning or replacing the moving parts means removing the flexible display first.
That gap matters more than the score suggests: a phone can be easy to open and still hard to rescue. The same teardown looks at the cracked inner screens owners have reported, and offers a hypothesis rather than a verdict.
What iFixit thinks may be cracking screens
Owners describe a noise when opening or closing the phone, then a small line down the fold and a bright line across the display. Some failures appeared within hours of purchase, or before setup was even finished.
iFixit doubts the accordion cable that carries data and power across the hinge is responsible. Reported breaks cluster near where the cable gap meets the central hinge support, slightly lower than where the cable passes through.
Its simulation suggests the center support bar may not drop far enough, so the curved screen presses onto it and creates a stress hotspot. iFixit presents this as a hypothesis, not a confirmed cause.
What the score means if you already own one
For a typical owner, the practical takeaways are modest. Opening the phone takes four pentalobe screws at the entrance and, by iFixit’s count, five different screwdriver types overall, so a basic bit set will not cover it.
The disassembly tree is fairly flat, though some components sit under flex cables. The logic board is single layer, and some functions moved to a single layer I/O board.
A provisional 5 is an honest middle: better than any foldable before it, still a long way from a phone you would fix at the kitchen table. Once parts ship through self-service, iFixit’s final number will show whether the hinge and screen costs stay out of reach.
