OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Finances to Free and Go users in the US, according to its October 2, 2026 release notes. The feature, which connects your bank accounts to ChatGPT, started as a Pro preview in May 2026. Opening it to free accounts widens the audience from people who chose to pay to anyone with the app on a phone. That makes it worth knowing what ChatGPT Finances reads, what it cannot touch, and how to cut the connection.
TL;DR: ChatGPT Finances is now rolling out to Free and Go users in the US on web, iOS, and Android. It reads spending, balances, investments, and optionally an Experian credit report, but it cannot move money, pay bills, or make trades. Synced account data is deleted within 30 days of disconnecting, yet your chat history stays until you delete it.
What ChatGPT Finances can see once you connect
Connecting runs through Plaid, the service OpenAI’s help center article on Finances in ChatGPT names for linking institutions. You tap Get started in Finances, or type @Finances, connect my accounts, then sign in through Plaid and pick your banks and cards.
Plaid access covers transaction history, balances, subscriptions and recurring bills, upcoming payments, investment holdings, and loan details such as APRs and due dates. Credit is a separate step, and a more personal one.
| Connection | What ChatGPT can read | How it updates |
|---|---|---|
| Plaid | Spending, balances, subscriptions, holdings, loans | Syncs typically within minutes, rarely several hours |
| Experian | VantageScore 3.0 (300 to 850), credit report, utilization | Updates monthly after the first connection |
The Experian check is a soft inquiry that does not affect your score, per the help center, and you can disconnect it without removing your bank connections. A long list of what it can read makes the list of what it cannot do worth reading next.
What ChatGPT Finances cannot do
ChatGPT Finances is read-only where it counts. The help center says it cannot move money, pay bills, change account settings, make trades, change retirement contributions, or open and close accounts.
It also cannot file your taxes. OpenAI states that it is not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, or tax preparer, and that answers are for informational and planning purposes only.
The realistic job is smaller than the pitch: budgeting help, debt payoff plans, subscription audits, and explanations of what moves a credit score. Picture asking why your grocery spending jumped the night before rent is due, then finding the answer is one pending charge counted twice.
Where the ChatGPT Finances numbers can mislead you
ChatGPT can only show the data your institution makes available through the connection. Some institutions provide limited history, and some accounts share balances without full transaction detail, holdings, or loan terms.
Spending breakdowns may include transfers, credit card payments, reimbursements, or duplicate pending transactions. Credit report balances reflect what a lender last reported to Experian, not a live figure, and a VantageScore 3.0 can differ from the score your lender uses.
Connected does not mean complete, and that gap is easy to miss until a number looks wrong. Wrong numbers are one risk, and where the data sits afterward is the other.
How to keep control of your financial data
Finances conversations follow the model training choices you already made under Settings, then Data controls, according to the help center. Temporary chats are not used for training or memories.
To disconnect Plaid accounts, go to Settings, then Apps, then Finances, or use the Finances home page. Synced account data is deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days of disconnecting.
Disconnecting does not erase conversations already in your history, and financial memories have to be removed separately from the Finances home page. Our guide to phone tracking privacy settings covers the wider cleanup on the device itself.
Who should connect an account and who should wait
If you mainly want to find subscriptions you forgot about, the connection is a low-effort trade, especially if you skip the Experian step. If your accounts hold anything you would not want summarized in a chat, use a Temporary chat or leave it unconnected.
OpenAI also added ChatGPT virtual try-on to shopping the day before, so the app is moving further into everyday spending. Finances is limited to the US for now, and nothing in the release notes says when that changes.
