You do not necessarily have to be a stalker to end up watching someone’s Instagram story. Often by mistake, while scrolling around, you may end up tapping on the profile avatar, and if there is an active story, then you end up viewing it. It can be embarrassing for many who simply stalk a person and knowingly or unknowingly end up seeing their Instagram stories.

Is There A Way to Undo After Viewing an Instagram Story?

No, technically, no such option is available., After viewing an Instagram story, your profile will be visible in the list of Instagram users who viewed that story.

While there is no way to revert this action, you can do a few things to avoid getting noticed by the user who posted the Instagram story.

6 Ways to Unsee an Instagram Story after Viewing it

I have explained all three 6 methods that work and will keep you safe from getting listed as a viewer of any Instagram story.

Block the Account of the User Whose Story You Viewed

Once you realize that you have seen the Instagram story, it may happen that the person who posted the story will know about you immediately. This may not happen every time, and the person may check at a later time regarding who checked their Instagram stories.

In the meantime, you can block that user on Instagram. When you block them, they won’t be able to see your profile listed on their stories even though you had viewed them.

To block any account, here are the steps you should follow.

1. Open the profile of the concerned user you want to block.
2. Tap on the 3-dot button in the top-right corner
3. Then Tap on Block
4. Confirm your action by selecting any of the two options that mention simply blocking that person’s current account or blocking all the accounts they may create.
   

Keep in mind that, if you followed that person or vice versa upon blocking,/you will be unfollowed automatically.

Disable the Internet Connection and View the Story

If you are curious to stalk at any cost and watch other Instagram users’ stories, you can do that by disabling your device’s internet connection.

1. Open the profile of the concerned user whose Instagram story you want to watch.
2. Then disable the data option in the pull-down quick access tray(in Android) and tap on the Data button to disable it.
   
3. Now, tap on the avatar or the story that a user has posted.
4. Note that if a video clip is posted in the story, it may not run if the internet is cut off.

If you are using the internet through WiFi, you can disable the same by tapping on the WiFi button in the Pull-down quick access tray.

You can even enable the flight mode and view the story easily without getting noticed.

Note: It is important to remember that after you view the story by going offline, DO NOT immediately go online on Instagram. Wait for 24 hours before using Instagram actively. Otherwise, your story view will be registered right in the Seen section of that concerned Instagram story.

24 hours is the time that an Instagram story will remain active in the feed. So, depending on what time the story was posted and when you viewed it, calculate the 24-hour window and stay away from Instagram.

Deactivate Your Instagram

Another safe way to unsee someone’s Instagram story after viewing it is by deactivating your Instagram account.

Once you view the story, log in to your Instagram from a PC browser or mobile browser. This is required as deactivating the Instagram account is possible only from the PC version of Instagram or through a mobile browser-based Instagram.

1. Tap on your Instagram profile.
2. From the menu, tap on Settings.
   
3. Under that, navigate down to the option “temporarily Disable My Account” and tap on it.
   
4. On the next page, you have to specify why you wish to disable your account and enter the account password as well.
5. Then confirm by clicking on Temporarily Disable Account.
   

As the Instagram stories are active for 24 hours, do not reactivate your account for that period; otherwise, you will be listed in the Seen section of the Instagram story that you viewed. To be on the safer side, reactivate your Instagram profile after 48 hours.

Create a Burner Account to View the Instagram Story

The safest way to view someone’s Instagram story without getting marked as a viewer is to use a burner account. Some refer to this as a fake Instagram account.

From your existing profile, you can create a new account on Instagram. Follow the steps explained below to generate your new account.

1. Launch Instagram on your phone.
2. Go to your profile and tap the Menu button at the top-right corner.
3. On the menu, scroll to Add Account and tap on it.
4. Select Create New Account.
   
5. Next, choose a username and press Next.
6. Set a password and tap Next.
7. Tap on Complete Sign-up to finish the account creation process.
   
   
8. Once you have created your burner account, log in to it.
9. Search for the account whose Instagram stories you want to watch.
10. Tap the orange/pink circular band on the Instagram profile picture to view the story.
    

When the person who uploaded the story checks the list of people who viewed the story, your burner account username will appear in that.

This way, you can view a story without using your primary Instagram account.

The above trick has a caveat that you should know about. If the Instagram account whose stories you want to view with the fake account is private, you will end up at a dead end.

There is no way or any technology available to bypass a private Instagram account and view its stories.

Unless you send a follow request and the concerned account accepts it, you cannot view their posts and stories.

Also, if the other Instagram user doesn’t like connecting with anonymous or possibly fake-looking accounts, they might not even accept your follow request.

Ideally, this is the best way to view Instagram stories without using your primary account. In my suggestion, creating a burner account is the best way to view the current Instagram story as well as highlights without revealing your identity.

Watch the Story in Instagram Highlights

You can watch Instagram stories from the highlights section of an account if you don’t want to go as far as creating a fake Instagram account or don’t have a friend’s Instagram account to rely upon.

Instagram users save pretty much all of the stories they post using the highlights feature. You can go through the highlights and binge on the stories.

A story that is older than 24 hours and has been added to a highlight won’t list the account names that view it afterwards.

There are a few loopholes you should be aware of if you want to view Instagram highlights only.

If a story was posted less than 24 hours ago on Instagram and was added to a highlight, the user who posted it can still see the profiles that viewed the story.

So, when you see a story in a highlight with your primary account, your username will appear in the list of individuals that viewed the story(if it was included in a highlight within 24 hours of posting).

Secondly, if an Instagram account is private, you cannot view their highlights or any content they post unless you follow them.

View the Instagram Story from a Friend’s Account

Curious to see the Insta story of someone, but they have a private account, or you simply don’t want to follow them?

Find a friend or family member who may be following the account of that individual whose Instagram stories you want to see. Request your friend/sibling to allow you to view the story of the person they are following on Instagram.

Now, this trick will work only if your friend allows you to use their account to view the Instagram stories. It is probably the least useful way, but it is a sure way to get away by viewing someone’s Instagram without getting listed as a viewer on their story.

The concerned Instagram user will know that the person who follows them on the platform viewed the story, which is a normal phenomenon. They won’t know that it is you who saw it.
