Apple tells repair techs to fix or replace cracked iPhone Duo displays, but there is no recall

iPhone Duo Cracked Display: Apple Memo Tells Techs to Repair

Apple has told Apple Stores and authorized repair providers to inspect a cracked iPhone Duo display and then repair or replace the phone, according to an internal memo that MacRumors obtained. The iPhone Duo cracked display problem now has a quiet, behind the scenes response to go with Apple’s public statement.

If your Duo’s inner screen has started showing lines, the practical route is a service visit, not a wait for a recall that Apple has not announced.

TL;DR: A memo sent to Apple Stores and authorized service providers this week tells technicians to inspect cracked iPhone Duo units and repair or replace them under standard procedures. Apple has announced no recall and no public repair program. iFixit’s teardown points to the hinge area but names no confirmed cause, so owners with damage should go through AppleCare.

What the iPhone Duo cracked display memo says

The memo was shared with Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers this week, and MacRumors says it later obtained a copy. It advises technicians to inspect the iPhone Duo and repair or replace it in line with their standard procedures.

MacRumors does not quote the memo or give its exact date, and I have not seen the document myself. What is reported is short, but it is enough to show that Apple expects customers to walk in with this problem.

That is a quieter signal than a recall, but it is still a signal. It also leads straight to what Apple has been willing to say out loud.

What Apple has said publicly about the inner display

Apple told MacRumors on October 26, 2026 that it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units.” Customers with display problems were told to contact AppleCare for a replacement, by phone at 1-800-APL-CARE in the U.S. and Canada or through Apple’s support site. As of that report, Apple had not issued a recall or launched a public repair program.

Our earlier report on cracked inner screens covered how owners first noticed the damage within hours of the October 23 launch. The memo now adds the repair side of that story, with Apple still giving no cause and no count.

What iFixit found near the hinge

iFixit’s teardown, published October 25, 2026, says reported breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support. The damage it describes follows a row and a column of pixels, which it ties to a localized fault in the tiny electrical connections.

iFixit suggests the center support bar may not drop far enough, which would create a stress point where the screen folds onto it. It also says it does not know which component is responsible, so this remains a hypothesis and not a finding.

The same teardown gave the Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, and named the inner display and hinge as the biggest deductions. A phone can be easy to open and still have one very hard part to fix.

What to do if your Duo’s inner screen shows lines

Start with AppleCare, as Apple’s own statement says, and have the phone ready for inspection at a store or authorized provider. The memo suggests technicians are expecting exactly that visit.

Note when the lines first appeared and whether the phone was dropped or pressed on, since Apple has not said how technicians decide between a repair and a replacement.

The open question is cause. Until Apple or a teardown settles that, the memo is the clearest sign of how the company is handling the iPhone Duo cracked display in practice, one unit at a time.
